I was never called Her Royal Highness (Wallis Simpson)

My husband
gave up his crown and his life for me,
but still I did not love him,
not as he loved me.
I wanted to leave.
But when he died,
I missed him, I sought him
when the light of my reason
was already going out.
I was never called Her Royal Highness,
but they let me
at least be buried next to my husband,
who loved me so faithfully.

Poet's note. For Wallis Simpson, King Edward abdicated his crown, which was a huge scandal in its time.
